A Sneak Peek into the Future?

On April 16, Fifty eighth grade students from Montgomery Village Middle School in Montgomery Village, MD came to Mason for a college tour.

They were excited and nervous about visiting Mason because their other
classmates visited universities and colleges in Maryland.

The day started off with a tour of Mason from the CFA to SUB II to Johnson Center. The second half of the tour included a great lunch treat at the new Southside Dining facility. During lunch, they talked and mingled with
the "college kids."

After lunch, they were treated to a "real college life" talk with an alum of their middle school, who is currently a Student here at Mason. After gaining insight into college, they all got back on the bus tired, sleepy and having thoughts of dancing Gunstons in their heads.

We hope that the trip to Mason has planted the seed for these middle schoolers to be Mason Students in
five years.

We hope to see them then.

SPOTLIGHT: OFFICE ASSISTANTS

Student Centers is a diverse department with a variety of responsibilities. In order to better familiarize the Mason community with all aspects of the Student Centers team, we are going to feature a different functional unit in each issue of our newsletter.

In this issue we will be covering Student Centers' extraordinary Office Assistants!

Have you ever wondered about those students who answer the Student Centers phones? They are our Office Assistants. Office Assistants assist with answering the phones, promptly greeting guests, filing out invoices and generally help run the normal operations of our department. These five Office Assistants need to have the ability to work independently and take initiative. Additionally, they must be able to demonstrate a positive and professional image as they work in the Student Centers Administrative Office in the Johnson Center, Room 324. The Office Assistants report to Student Centers Associate Director of Training and Programs, Mecca Marsh.
The Office Assistants also work closely with our Office Manager, Kim Hilton, to make sure operations are running smoothly and customer service remains at its best.

Our Office Assistants look forward to assisting you with locker rentals, kiosk and banner reservations and much more! If you have any questions about Mason in general, feel free to ask one of the Office Assistants for information by calling our office at (703) 993-2921.

Facilities Updates

Public areas throughout the Johnson Center are slated to be painted this summer, including: the stacks, the study rooms, entrances and locker areas.

La Patisserie Café
in the Johnson Center will get an updated look with a new ceiling, new paint and ceiling fans.

The ticket booth in the Johnson Center Cinema
is going to be relocated to the other side of the room. This current ticket window shares an existing space that is not conducive to either operation. The Cinema renovations are scheduled to take place in the month of June.

Building Patriot Pride: SUB I and SUB II

Along with several construction projects occurring on Mason's Fairfax Campus, SUB I and SUB II are part of the mix.
SUB I will become the home of student-related services, such as Enrollment Management, Registrar, Student Accounts, Student Health, Judicial Affairs, Career Services, Multicultural Services, just to name a few.

SUB II will project itself to be a place to encourage involvement, exploration and connections with functions such as Student Activities, Orientation and Family Programs, Student Governance, Program Board, Leadership and Education, Gaming and Entertainment, Student Media, just to name a few. Food service will continue to exist in SUB I and a new food service concept will reside in the newly constructed SUB II.

The Construction page on our website will allow you to track anticipated start and occupancy dates for specific units in each building.

Additionally, you will see the current proposed schematic renderings of the construction project.

The SUBI construction will occur at the same time the construction of the new Data Center and Performing Arts addition is happening.

Aquia Creek Lane will provide some challenges, but University officials are working closely to minimize the potential impact. A Town Hall Meeting occurred on Friday, May 29 to provide an overview of all three projects so the occupants could receive a better picture of the construction projects that surround them.

The process to change the names of both SUB I and SUB II to capture the concepts of a student success center (SUB I) and student engagement center (SUB II) is also underway. The new names will reflect the intended functions and characters of the building. This is an exciting time for the Student Centers at Mason.

Stay tuned for updates!

Blackboard Collaborates with Student Centers, Cont.

In the last eNewsletter, Student Centers introduced the teaming up of Blackboard (as well as Mitsui) and Student Centers for a better solution to digital signage.

Blackboard has provided their input on how the presentation of the information on the digital screens should look. Student Centers has taken their input and is in the progress of constructing more of an animated feel, consisting of more movement and energy to capture the eyes of the audience who will see the screens.

Student Centers hopes to get to a level where the signage consists of both static content and animated content... Stay tuned.
