Student Successes Recognized at the Mission Possible Luncheon

The Mission Possible Luncheon took place on May 4, 2007. This event which marks the end of the 2006-2007 academic year was a great moment for our student and staff members. There was good food, laughs and the crowd pleasing end of year slide show.

There were numerous awards given: The Event Technician of the Semester Award recipient demonstrated a cooperative approach to event support and enhanced technical knowledge and abilities. Nathan Schneider received the Spring 07 Event Technician of the Semester Award; Douglas Hallock received the Fall 06 Event Technician of the Semester Award.

The Teamwork Award recipient demonstrates a collaborative attitude and approach to the effective provision of customer service and operations management. This award went to Alex Rosenwald, a Recreation Assistant in the Game Room.

The Volunteer Award recipient demonstrates the provision of unpaid services or assistance to the department, university, and/or community and has positively impacted his constituents either through commitment on the GMU committees or through some other form. This award went to Daniel Rivera, a Building Manager in SUB II.

The Professionalism Award recipient exemplifies professionalism through communication, interaction, dress and attitude, and positively reflects the image of the university. This award went to Manji Cheto, an Office Assistant in the Johnson Center.

The Initiative Award recipient best represents the student who goes beyond the call of duty and responds to operational concerns without directives, but through need and dedication. This award went to Whitney Borden, a Building Manager in SUB I.

Staff Development and Appreciation Day

Staff Development and Appreciation Day for Johnson Center and Student Union Operations was on June 13, 2007. This was a time to reflect on how we serve our customers, and what can we improve upon in the upcoming year. The day began with ice breakers and "get to know you" activities, along with some other fun. We then moved to a customer service workshop in English and Spanish, providing our staff with some additional tips and tricks to better serve the customer. After the workshop, we moved on to lunch where there was an opportunity for all the different units of JCSU Operations (JC, SUB I, and SUB II) to meet and socialize. Throughout the lunch, we presented some new awards for our employees:

Customer Service Award: Gilberto Guerrero
Teamwork Award: Sally Mohle
FISH Award: Jose Medina
Mason Link Student of the Year: Hector Sarria
Newcomer Award: Aaron Hayes

It was a successful day! We got to know each other better, we learned some more customer service tips and tricks, and we had fun!

Restructuring and Repositioning: Responding to Growth

Johnson Center and Student Union Operations recently completed a departmental restructuring. There are four primary functional areas that are headed by the following positions and staff:

• David Atkins, Executive Director of University Services and Student Centers
• Keith Ellis, Associate Director of Operations and Event Services
• Mecca Marsh, Associate Director of Training and Programs
• August Runge, Assistant Director of Facilities Maintenance

To see a bullet list of functional responsibilities of each area please click here. To see a supporting organizational chart, please click here. This restructuring was done to address our growth in event and food service support on all campuses, especially for the Fairfax campus and expanded responsibilities with Chesapeake.

Technology Support for Meeting Rooms in Johnson Center

There is a new technology change coming to the Johnson Center meeting rooms.

In the past, some of our meeting rooms had been retrofitted with technology - including smart boards and LCD projectors - while others have remained primarily for meeting space. This was done through a joint effort between Operations and Classroom Technology. Through much discussion, Classroom Technology, who has supported the equipment for events in those spaces, is going to concentrate their resources on their mission of classroom support. With Operations now taking over responsibility for the technical aspects of these rooms, it is our hope this will help alleviate some of the confusion for support services.

With this in mind, Operations has invested over $190,000 to upgrade and standardize all the meeting rooms. Each meeting room will have a multi-media podium, LCD projector and installed speakers for presentations. The user will be able to play DVDs, VHS tapes, and CDs and will also be able to easily connect his/her laptop to the system for presentations. The systems are designed to be very user friendly and easily controlled by the user. Each room will have detailed instructions on how to operate the equipment and how to contact Operations for troubleshooting, if you need any further assistance regarding anything from the technology in the room to the physical room setup.

The Johnson Center has eight meeting rooms, A-G located on the third floor west side, and the Gold Room located across from Dewberry Hall on the East. The rooms vary in size and are great rooms for meetings and presentations for up to 60 patrons.

Please join the JCSU Operations Staff and Search Committee in welcoming Keith to his new position.

Ginny Adams' Experience at Mason

I can’t believe the summer is already over! My time at George Mason has been short, yet incredibly beneficial. I pursued an internship at this university for several reasons: I have never been in a large university atmosphere, the diversity of this campus is an attractive feature, and I wanted to work with Mecca Marsh. When I met her at an ACUI conference almost a year ago, I was drawn to her energy and passion for her work, and I knew that we had a common denominator. I knew that Mason had things I wanted to experience, and here I am!

"This position has given me a chance to experience the configuration of a large university, and much more. The programming I have done has helped me take all those great ideas from my graduate program and see if I could make them fit in the real world. I have sharpened my tools, met a lot of wonderful people, and I feel that I can walk away from my short time here with a wealth of experience and knowledge.

"It’s kind of funny that my undergraduate and graduate careers have only been at Shepherd University in West Virginia, but I walk away from this position with a similar affinity for this campus and its people. Thank you for opening your doors to a student from another school; it is initiatives like this that build community, and help us continue to have conversations about our dynamic profession."
