85% of the thefts at Mason are preventable. Leaving valuables unattended greatly increases the likelihood your items will be stolen.

Dozing off can be just as bad as getting up and leaving your valuables unattended. Always be vigilant with unsecured items.

Did you know that over one million dollars worth of valuables were reported stolen from Mason campuses between 2010 and 2014?  Much of this theft was preventable; in fact, 85% of reported thefts at Mason are preventable.

Follow these tips to prevent theft and keep your personal belongings safe:

  • Never leave your laptop, cellphone, bag, or any other valuables unattended. Even if you are simple going to the bathroom or to get a drink of water, your belongings are at greater risk of being stolen.
  • Avoid sleeping while your items are unsecured. If you cannot watch your items, they are at risk of theft.
  • Keep your valuables out of sight if at all possible.
  • Avoid carrying more than you need – secure all other items in your residence.

Report all suspicious activity to Mason Police at 703-993-2810. To leave an anonymous tip, call the Crime Solvers Anonymous Tip Hotline at (703) 993-4111 or leave a tip online.
